FIRST MEETING

Summary and results

The 28th October, the first day of the meeting, was devoted to the journeys to Norway from Italy and Scotland. The Scottish students and teachers arrived at Ålesund Vigra Airport at 14:00 while the Italian students and teachers arrived in Vigra from Amsterdam at 20:05. The Project Coordinator of the Norwegian school had organized the transport from Vigra Airport to Brattvåg by bus. All the students stayed with Norwegian families and some of them stayed in Harøy or Midsund, so they took a ferry to get there.

On the following day, 29th October, they all met at Haram vidaregåande skule, where the Head Teacher, Jan Magne Helland, welcomed them with a short presentation of the school and especially of the international projects in which the school is involved. Ivar Roald, the Project Coordinator, presented the project objectives and the Partner School Coordinators and teachers participating in the project. He also illustrated the mutual links between the Norwegian school and the local companies.
After a short break, the Scottish and Italian students and teachers had the opportunity of visiting the workshops and classrooms of the hosting school. Then Guttorm Ulla from the Haram Forum for Business and Innovation illustrated the way the Norwegian school and the companies of the Møre og Romsdal region cooperate in the field of students' career guidance.with special regard to the maritime cluster and the fishing industry.
Later on, Hanne Ski and Camilla D. Alvestad, the Norwegian teachers involved in the project, explained what type of career guidance and counselling, in terms of information, support and "practical tools" which can help the students plan their professional careers, is given to them by the school staff. The afternoon was devoted to the students’ individual career talks with their teachers and some group work.

Career planningOn 30th October the participating students continued their career planning with the support of their teachers, individually and as group work.

In the afternoon, meetings were organized with young people working in the main local companies in Brattvåg: two young managers working at VARD, which is one of the major global designers and shipbuilders of offshore and specialized vessels used in the offshore oil and gas exploration and production and oil services industries, Meeting the managersand two young managers from Rolls-Royce Marine, which has a world leading position in the design, development, supply and support of products and systems for commercial and naval customers with a primary focus on power, propulsion and motion control solutions. The young managers spoke about their education and their careers and gave the students useful advice on their future studies and careers.

The following day, 31st October, was devoted to the visit of I.P. Huse, a big company located on the island of Harøy. Students and teachers reached the company by bus and by ferry.I.P. Huse

The company is the world leader when it comes to designing and building large winches for anchor handling vessels (AHTS). Its largest winches have a pull force of above 600 tons and its customers are yards, ship owners and oil companies.

 

I.P. HuseIn the afternoon, a meeting was organized also with the management staff of another company located on the island of Harøy, Rostein AS, which is the biggest Norwegian well-boat company, with 10 highly-specialized vessels serving the Norwegian aquaculture market. During the meetings, the students had the possibility to learn about the several career opportunities offered in the various industrial fields.

At the end of the visit all the project participants went back to Haram vidaregåande skule for the final dinner of the meeting.
